I met a nice woman on Friday - a parent at GCS, where I will soon do a book fair. She asked what I thought of the current state of children's books, a la is there anything out there really nice? I mentioned this book, 'At Night,' by Jonathan Bean, which is a pretty little book about a girl going to bed on a night that we can almost feel ourselves as it is depicted here. It isn't so much the pictures, and it isn't so much the words, but rather the sublime combination of the two together - evoking 'Goodnight Moon' in its cadence with a hint of 'Tar Beach' in its urban setting, but somehow reminding us of what it feels like to be small and part of the big world and to love it and feel safe there. This is a new favorite of mine.
